UltraLink

Users in operational environments across the globe rely on the ability to transmit data both timely and accurately. A key component of that exchange of digital messaging is the tactical modem. The tactical modem serves as the link between Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS), Precision Fires- Dismounted (PF-D) and other battle command systems. In recent years the tactical modem was plagued with reliability concerns, and the cost to acquire, update, and support those devices across the force had become burdensome.

After nearly two decades of relying on a single source vendor, Product Manager-Fire Support Command and Control (PdM FSC2) made the timely decision to address cost and availability concerns with the aging hardware. PdM FSC2 turned to engineers from the Army's Communications-Electronics Research, Development , and Engineering Center's Unified Lab for Tactical Radios-Army (ULTR-A) to take a fresh approach to alleviate the growing supply chain issues, and do so in a way that would make the device more reliable, supportable, and sustainable.

The result of that effort is the ULTRALink tactical modem. A government owned MIL-STD-188-220 tactical modem that meets or exceed the function to its predecessor. Rigorous testing has improved the design, and led to improved performance. The ULTRALink is hardened to better standup to the conditions experienced by users through the conduct of their missions. The ULTRALink is designed to exceed both the MIL-STD-810G environmental standard and MIL-STD-461 EMI standard. All of this makes for a durable, dependable and up to date modem at a considerable cost savings. The ULTRALink is engineered to provide tactical communications capability to the Fires community for decades to come.
